The mat black paint was used in an emergency repair when no other paint was available.
This Blog records to some detail -- from start to finish -- the building of a PBK18 kayak during the month of August in 2010. It is based on a set of plans purchased in the late 60s; is simple to build from wood, glue, screws and canvas, but does require some carpentry skills. A number of products and processes were substituted and this is documented and is based on experience from a build in 1974 also posted in the beginning of this blog. Enjoy - pbk18.builder@gmail.com

After just Under 40 Years of Use
After 40 years of use and many miles or kilometres of paddling. Note the use of duct tape. That is the best in an emergency to patch up a boat, even when wet.

Pictures of the first PBK 18 Being Built.
Building my second kayak the PBK 18. The back of the photo is inscribed "Late summer 1974."

Pictured here is the bottom with five keels, gotta watch those rocks. I was anticipating running lots of rapids in the Canadian rivers.
Sanding the edge of the coaming was one of the last finishing touches.
I had started cutting the frames in Ottawa while on a summer work term. It was all done in a small backyard of a rooming house where I lived with a couple of draft dodgers up from the States.
At the end of the work term I finished the kayak in Vaudreuil Quebec, back home with my parents. This is where these photos are taken. We then lived on Le Petite Cote, or Route 17 right next to the Hilltop Motel.
