This Blog records to some detail -- from start to finish -- the building of a PBK18 kayak during the month of August in 2010. It is based on a set of plans purchased in the late 60s; is simple to build from wood, glue, screws and canvas, but does require some carpentry skills. A number of products and processes were substituted and this is documented and is based on experience from a build in 1974 also posted in the beginning of this blog. Enjoy - pbk18.builder@gmail.com

The first little PBK 10
This is the first kayak that I built. It is an 11 foot PBK 10, had an 28 in. beam and 3 in. draft. Being so short it tended to yaw a lot when paddling. In the short but sometimes high waves of the Lake of Two Mountains it behaved wonderfully. It bobbed like a cork and I remember that it was a fabulous experience paddling among big waves.

I have seen a PBK 18 craft on the lakes around Haliburton Ontario. It is a good looking kayak and performs as well as it looks.
ReplyDeleteI have just ordered plans for the PBK 10, and hope to get building in late March of this year, 2016. Where I paddle chop is not usually an issue, depth of keel is at times. Looking forward to communicating with you some if possible. Thanks, K
